How To Enjoy Saint Patrick’s Day in the Emerald City

Irish pubs plan a special day of events

By Chris S. Nishiwaki March 14, 2025

A pub interior decorated for St. Patrick's Day, featuring Guinness banners, a stone fireplace, a staircase, and patrons seated on both levels.
Mulleady's in Magnolia, usually closed on Mondays, will be open on Saint Patrick's Day.

Did you know that the bucolic green often associated with Ireland and the patron saint historically was not affiliated with that color? The Order of St. Patrick is associated with the color blue.

And Saint Patrick was not Irish. He was born in Wales.

“Also, Saint Patrick is not the only patron saint of Ireland,” says Paula Stokes, a native of Ireland now living in Seattle. “He is one of three, together with Saint Brigid (her feast day is Feb. 1), and Saint Columba.”

Furthermore, St. Patrick’s Day is a somber occasion recognized with quiet prayer at home or in church, far from the bacchanalia exercised state-side today.

For Seattlites looking to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, here are some suggestions.

No one needs a reason to drink beer. But bringing people together is the best one.

Seattle Beer Week is about community — not just the crowds at taprooms and breweries, but the people who make the beer, haul kegs, trade ideas, and keep the taps running. This spirit carries into the 16th annual Seattle Beer Week, which runs May 9-17 with more than 50 events across the city. It’s grown…

New wine bar and bottle shop offers small-batch wines by women, BIPOC, and queer winemakers

Alyssa Lisle is out to crush the norms around wine. Lisle opened Lucy’s Bottle Shop in January in a nondescript midcentury warehouse at 23rd Avenue West and Emerson Street — the newest addition to a nameless little micro-neighborhood to the west of Fisherman’s Terminal, just around the corner from Figurehead Brewing. Its mission behind opening…

Taste Washington Celebrates 25 Years

Annual event is for ‘every palate and personality’

Since its inception in 1998, Taste Washington has attracted wineries from boutique producers such as Trothe (fewer than 300 cases of tightly allocated boutique wines annually) to Chateau Ste. Michelle, which produces more than 3 million cases a year.  Now the largest single region consumer wine event in the country, it will celebrate its 25th birthday (minus two pandemic-induced cancellations) this week with several days of…
