Must List: Six Fun Things to Do This Week

Mysterious sharks, flirty stormtroopers, and a sky full of fireworks

A group of dancers in partial Stormtrooper costumes perform on stage under blue and purple lights at Pioneer Square, posing with toy blasters—a unique highlight if you’re exploring what to do in Seattle this week.

What are you doing for the 4th? I caught some early fireworks after an AquaSox game on Saturday — so pretty. Not everyone loves them, though. My sister’s dog has to be held like a baby all night. Thinking of those who struggle with the noise, and cheering on anyone braving the Seattle crowds.

This week, we’ve got the just-announced Bumbershoot visual arts lineup, which includes a cat circus. We’re also sharing the story of an inclusive new coffee stand in Burien, and 5 Things to Eat in July.

Here’s whats going on this week.

A man sits on a stool outdoors painting a landscape scene on canvas, with his art supplies and a water bottle beside him. Trees and grass form the background—it's a Must List moment for 07-03-2025.

Art For Everybody

July 3-7
SIFF Film Center
$15+

You may know Thomas Kinkade for his glowing cottages and pastel skies. What you may not know is that after his death, a hidden trove of darker, more complex paintings was discovered. A new documentary at SIFF explores the contrast between Kinkade the brand and Kinkade the man. Sounds fascinating. Meet you there?

Performers dressed as Stormtroopers pose on stage under blue lighting, with the text "The Empire Strips Back: A Burlesque Parody" in bold yellow letters. Catch this Must List show on 07-03-2025!.

The Empire Strips Back: A Burlesque Parody

Now-Aug. 24
The Cornish Playhouse at Seattle Center
$49+

It’s exactly what it sounds like: Darth Vader in fishnets. Stormtroopers getting flirty. The Star Wars-themed burlesque parody, which originated in Australia, is here through August, and tickets are selling fast. As The Guardian put it, the show is packed with “sexy strip-and-dance numbers, stylishly lit and slickly performed to a banging pop and rock score.”

A large crowd watches colorful fireworks light up the night sky above a cityscape, with red, blue, purple, and gold bursts dominating the scene—a must-list event to experience on 07-03-2025.

Seafair 4th of July Fireworks

July 4, 10:20 p.m.
Lake Union
Free

Whether you trek  into Gas Works Park, post up on a rooftop in Eastlake, or find a patch of grass along South Lake Union, Seattle’s Fourth of July fireworks are a summer staple. If you lucked into a houseboat invite or booked a spot on one of the party cruises, even better — the reflections over the water are stunning. It’s loud, romantic, and hands-down one of the prettiest nights of the year.

Shark in the Park

Sunday, July 6, 11 a.m.
Redondo Waterfront and Wooten Park

Des Moines is throwing a party for a very misunderstood local: the bluntnose sixgill shark. They show up off Redondo Beach each summer, and Highline College’s MaST Center Aquarium is turning it into a full-on marine science fest. There’ll be food trucks, shark exhibits, crafts, and dive team meetups for those wanting to suit up and jump in.

Four men stand together on a porch, posing for a photo. Above them, a graphic reads "Spotlight at Waterfront Park," with decorative star accents and the date 07-03-2025—an event that’s a must list for your calendar!.

Spotlight | Black & Loud Fest

Thursday, July 10, 6 p.m.
Pier 62 – Waterfront Park
Free

This free Waterfront Park preview features Seattle’s own King Youngblood — I’ve had the joy of catching them live around the city, and they’re so much fun. The lineup includes more rising local acts. It’s family-friendly, open-air, and sets the stage for the full Black & Loud Fest later this summer.

Fave Five: Settling into Fall

Fave Five: Settling into Fall

Warm light, early sunsets, and the comfort of small adventures.

September and October are my favorite months in Seattle. It’s still lovely outside—plenty of sun—but the air is cooler. I find myself scanning the day for something good to do before dark: a last farmers market tomato, a long walk, or a reason to make soup. It reminds me of childhood, squeezing in one more…

A fall season opener, Taste of the Sound, Downton’s farewell

Fall is just about here, showing itself in the chill of early mornings and the fog that settles over the city. It’s the season when Seattle feels like the center of the art world. We dropped into Pioneer Square to catch fashion at its most fun during First Thursday Art Walk, rounded up this season’s…

Dinosaurs, glowing art, and more

Hi! Have you seen Dan Pelosi’s new cookbook? It’s fabulous. So is this story about foraging in the city, which makes fiddleheads look irresistible. And our September/October issue should be hitting shelves any day now—it’s the travel issue, and the first one under our new editor-in-chief, who jumped in mid-production and took the helm like…

Seattle’s biggest gaming convention brings fans, creators, and community together

Games are big business in the Seattle area.  The city is home to many major gaming studios such as Bungie, Nintendo, Valve, and Wizards of the Coast, plus a thriving independent developer scene. Maybe it’s the rainy weather (or all the coffee) that fosters creativity and draws people together to play their favorite games, whether…
